Sustainability

At Chico Marketplace, we’ve developed an internal sustainability roadmap that guides how we approach new projects and manage our existing property day to day. Our commitment is reflected in our actions, which include:

• Solar panels have been installed across the majority of available roof space, providing renewable energy that is used in common areas and by tenants throughout the mall. The solar program avoids the equivalent of 2,200,000 lbs of coal a year and creates a carbon sequestration benefit equivalent to 33,000 newly planted trees.
• The installation of ceiling skylights, an energy management system for the HVAC units, and a reflective “Cool Roof” that dissipates heat, all of which help reduce electrical consumption, conserving natural resources, and help to preserve the environment.
• All interior public common areas and service areas have been retrofitted with state-of the art energy efficient lighting solutions.
• Monitoring devices were installed on various vending units to turn the power off after hours or when there is no activity.
• Implementation of these systems has resulted in a 32.5% reduction in our energy use.
• Prolific supply of local agricultural resources allows us to use recycled almond orchard materials for the landscaped areas of our parking lot. Studies indicate that re-using by-products from producing and harvesting almond orchards has had a key positive environmental impact and will help further reduce carbon emissions.
• Live trees line the center common area and act as natural air purifiers within Chico Marketplace.
• Chico Marketplace does not use a central heating system; instead, heat is generated from store fixtures, lighting, skylights and body heat.
